September 2020 Update

Our vision, 8.5 years from now, includes the aspiration of planting 500,000  Life Groups. We have already acknowledged that this is a task that ‘we alone’ cannot achieve. God is saying the time is ‘now’ to speak and influence openly to encourage this to be a reality.

There are encouraging stories of Life Groups growing amidst the situation. Our choice to publish Love Your Village via WhatsApp and social media has helped people to take a step forward. For example, in 4 areas of Zambia where Bernard has directly encouraged people using these online resources, Life Groups have sprung up. We are aware of 10 Life Groups that have begun in this way.

May 2020 Update

This is a season of uncertainty coupled with opportunity. We believe and have seen God use his people in every community. Our message of living for the truth and loving people has perhaps never been more relevant. We have never needed the ‘everyone’ of the church more. Within Africa and well, everywhere, the church is having to learn a lesson that perhaps the structures we have built are not as sure footed as we thought they were. There is a real openness to questions of God and his relevance to everyday life. People are hearing the call that God can use them right where they are.

The early part of the year is where the majority of people actively involved with Dignity slow down for a month or two. With most of the people involved with Dignity relying on farming, it works well for them. They are able to grow their crops and do the work they need to do. Everything takes a ‘breather’ if you like. This example is really helpful. It allows us all to focus ourselves on what is important in both life and the work of Dignity. This update contains some reflections on what is going well, opportunities in the future and some general thoughts on how Dignity is ‘doing’.

December 2019 Update

The influence and geography of Dignity is expanding. More people are coming to know Jesus, more people are ‘loving their village’ and more people are standing together. That has to be good news! This year has been far from easy, but we continue to involve more people and then take the time to invest in them. It’s like these people are the fuel, the resource that the Holy Spirit partners with to take the work of God’s kingdom further and closer to the hearts of many people.

Jon and Jude Witt have traveled extensively across Namibia, teams and individuals in Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania and the DRC have been working to plant Life Groups and two teams of volunteers from the UK have given their time and energy to add to the work going on. This month, Dignity celebrated our 12th birthday! Whilst we have grown and morphed over the years, the work of Dignity has remained true to our roots, focusing on pioneering, people and working together. By the end of October people that represent Dignity will have worked from the Atlantic Ocean on Africa’s west coast to the Indian Ocean on Africa’s East coast. This is a journey by road, Swakopmund to Mombasa, that is 4122 kilometres along which you would pass hundreds of Life Groups. Currently there are gaps where there are no Life Groups…imagine if we could fill in all those gaps…

It was amazing to see a friend share about a SIM missionary from New Zealand. Pictured to the right is Dee who with others is currently planting Life Groups in Kasempa region in North Western Zambia. What is amazing is that this activity is another step away from Dignity and it is still happening. Our practice has gone out from us into some villagers and leaders from Kasempa, who then shared them with Dee, who now teaches others. How cool is that? It’s a story of the reach of empowering others and the strength of ideas rather. It’s a demonstration of Dignity being a movement. This thought provides the theme for this report: Movement.

Things take a different rhythm at the start of the year as Impact Teams take a bit of time off before launching into a few months of follow up visits to existing Life Groups. The Dignity Zambia leadership’s 2019 vision of ‘Reaching the Unreached’ is well underway as we see pioneering at a national level.

“Each time we hear news from Zambia or Tanzania, whether it’s good or challenging news, it reminds me of just how amazing the 21st century church can be!”
– Fran Hesketh, Dignity Trustee

There is a very real sense of expansion happening right now. Look at the numbers of groups planted in the last 2 years. At the end of 2016, 440 groups had been planted. Now 760 have been planted; that’s 320 groups in the last 2 years. Thank you to Jesus, that is seriously impressive. Each group means people coming to know Jesus, growing in Jesus and being involved in their community, planting other groups and reaching those around them.

We believe expansion is the theme to take us into this next year. The word about Dignity is getting out and so far, everywhere Life Groups are meeting, amazing things have happened!

November 2018 Update

The last two months have seen a lot of pioneering work take place in various locations. Jon has spent time in Botswana and Namibia. Bernard and others have visited Siavonga Province, Nakonde and elsewhere. It’s been busy! In every location we are looking for those few people who become a foundation for the future.

The number of Life Groups planted has smashed through the 700 mark and an extremely high percentage of Life Groups continue to stay the course, bringing Christ to people and transforming their community.

What a couple of months it has been! We have travelled quite literally thousands of kilometres and between all of our teams spoken to hundreds of people about the life changing message of Jesus and the need to work to transform our community. We have visited far flung places like Kenya or remote parts of Zambia and all of the time we have carried on planting new groups and supporting existing ones. We continue with our everyday work with the Life Groups but our message is beginning to travel wider.

July 2018 Update

More than ever we are absolutely convinced that the way forward is the releasing and involvement of much wider groups of people in our work. The Christian principle of giving away power, resources and advantage to others, in short giving life away is the wind at our backs and a guide for the future. In so many ways we believe we are progressively on a course that will help us to achieve this more and more, through training people, producing resources or simply being friends to those who have no friends.

March 2018 Update

Jon Witt has taken some time off over the last few weeks and on reflection this seems like a time of consideration and laying foundations for the future. The continuing development of the team in Zambia is a cause for a huge encouragement. Tied with this is consideration of questions about how we establish future hubs and work. We have begun to explore the idea of ‘Home and Away kits’ (working title) to partner and work with others. There has continued to be challenges but overall the work has shown amazing resilience that even if one person falls others step into their shoes. Life Groups continue to grow.

December 2017 Update

It has been a difficult couple of months for the work of Dignity. There was what we could call a sustained attack upon the ministry as a whole. In various areas accusation, gossip, rumour and financial pressure have all mounted to cause various ‘firefighting problems’ within the work and in particular some of the communities we seek to reach. There has been the sad death of a team member. However, despite these challenges, the work of Life Groups has grown together with some excellent examples of their effect. We have also seen God provide what we need, when we required it, either by people assisting or financial gifts. We have also seen some of our team members grow up and begin to flourish more and more.

Over the last 2 months, we have been working to launch the “Deeper” campaign, an exciting initiative over the next 1.5 years. Jon, Jude and Family have returned to Zambia for the rest of 2016. The Impact Teams have been in follow up mode up until June, now have started training areas again. Our 2 aims in the first part of the year are to build the hub team and run our “Deeper” campaign to create more leadership in villages. We have seen great support for our teams of walkers on the Welsh 3000s and have had a good turnout at other events.
